“Dr. Unk" has transmogrified! They are now “Spiraling Shapes”.
Founded in March 2013, Dr. Unk came together quickly, due to the fact that it was comprised of 5 experienced performers and a composer with long histories in various Ann Arbor bands. Those bands include: Tsars, Juice, Borax, 5 Ton Creek, Skinflower, Follow 14, Quatro Veda, The Bottom 99, Mr. Largebeat and The Charlie Dentel Band. That they also had a deep catalog of original music to draw from, got the group out and performing, quickly.
Dr. Unk debuted at The Waterhill Music Festival in May of that year as well as playing each subsequent year, garnering a great reception, and drawing larger audiences each time. They will be playing Waterhill Festival, yet again, on May 1, 2016 now as “Spiraling Shapes”.
They played regularly at the “Rock Night at the Zal-Gaz Grotto” throughout 2013, as well as at Woodruff’s in Ypsilanti. Since 2014 they played numerous times at The Club Above, were greatly lauded at The Ypsi-Arboroo Festival, and recently debuted at The Maidstone Theater.
In that time they released on CD, through Rabbits Roar Records, a single, “Ants in Pajamas” B/W “Snakeyes” (instr.), as well as their album, Dr. Unk’s “Somautomaton” which came out in November of 2015.
Dr. Unk described their sound as “70’s music written for the 21st century”. This gave them the opportunity to explore genres from garage to pop and power pop, psychedelia and heavy rock, Southern rock, ballads, glam, and early experimental alternative. The sharp listener detects these influences, not the least of which include - King Crimson, The Who, The Kinks, Cream, Bowie, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Muswell Hillbillies, The Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane, as well as Brian Eno and even Siousxie Sue.
Following changes of personnel in the rhythm section, Dr. Unk chose to take this opportunity to re-brand themselves to better express this movement, their quirkiness, and the fluidity of styles, in their music.
